Bio

Sophie Kendall is an American artist working in drawing, painting, and clay/found object sculptures and vessels. Sophie’s work explores concepts of intimacy, feminism, queerness, humor, and community. Her recent works use three dimensional clay features to bring to life her idiosyncratic but relatable paintings on ceramic vessels, portraying her own personal values and sense of humor, as well as larger social issues. Sophie was formally trained in various art forms through a family heritage of artists, and a Waldorf Education, followed by a BFA from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. She  also studied art in Spain, Bolivia, and Peru at various points before and during college. She grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but is currently based in Portland, Oregon. Her work has shown in various online gallery shows throughout the pandemic, and is currently in an exhibit at Capizzo Studio Art gallery in Saugatuck, Michigan.

Statement

Art, as a means of communication, meaning-making and relationship-processing has always been a way for me to navigate the world. My work began primarily as drawings, helping me process relationships and understand different forms of intimacy, eventually moving into the three dimensional realm through clay and found object sculpture. An art practice in clay has been a way for me to physically portray and explore my sense of humor and feminist values, as well as to realize my connection to nature through the very act of making with the material of the earth.
